The mission of On Our Own of Montgomery County, a wellness and recovery center, is to support individuals with mental illness. We advocate for our own empowerment as well as our civil and human rights.
In order to overcome the trauma of psychiatric illness and the discrimination associated with it, one needs to become empowered. To be empowered is to gain control over one's life and to build self esteem and independence. This is done through making one's own decisions, having freedom of choice and helping other people with the same kinds of difficulties. In this way, one participates in the recovery process and gains dignity and respect through accepting responsibility.
On Our Own of Montgomery County, founded in 1983, has a track record of consistent, high quality service by and of our consumers. Our facilities offer a home-like atmosphere for our members and we offer the following benefits:
· Provide a safe and welcoming Wellness and Recovery Center, seven days a week, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
· Furnish leadership opportunities for mental health consumers. Serve a diverse consumer population.
· Provide a varied and rich program of weekly activities.
· Access to technology.
· Advocate for consumer issues.
· Staffed by and for consumers.
On Our Own of Montgomery County benefits the community by helping those who live with mental illness access the services and social networking they need through peer support. Our computer lab allows our members to acquire computer skills and access resources. We are currently in a rebuilding phase. We intend to increase our membership through improved communications with our community (consumers, businesses, individuals and organizations) and enhanced outreach.
